Got back-up? Entire issue of Business 2.0 lost two weeks before press time

From TechCrunch:

The June issue of Business 2.0 magazine was inadvertently deleted from the editorial server on April 23, according to a number of sources. And the backup server wasn’t working properly. The result? An entire issue down the drain just two weeks before press time.

[....]

A 2003 article in Business 2.0 likened backups to flossing – “everyone knows it’s important, but few devote enough thought or energy to it.” I guess Business 2.0 forgot to floss.

Ouch!

One can only hope that the Chief Technology Officer’s resume was on another computer. It seems likely he’ll be needing it…

Technology aside, there is really no reason something like this should happen in a multi-person organization. Any given issue is a collection of pieces of work from many different people and should be able to be easily recreated. I can’t believe they didn’t have a checks-and-balances system in place.

Since the governor of NJ got in the bad car accident (where he did not where his seatbelt) I immediately became obsessive about putting my seatbelt on, even if to re-park my car. It stinks that awful things need to happen to whack people into shape.

It is amazing that this can even happen! I guess I’m part of the “Ctrl+S, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+S every 30 seconds” era… And to imagine such hard work WASTED by such a careless act?

…OR the loss of the data could have been the fault of aliens, hackers, or memory-attacking fuzzy bunnies…

Excellent reminder that I need to get on the ball in this area. The backup resource I’ve had in my planner to subscribe to for awhile is Mozy: http://mozy.com/mozy/overview
I wouldn’t mind a referral on other backup services. For just $4.95 it would seem hard to beat, but I’m not a techie….

I read this article and about laughed my arse off. I have told people over and over again to backup their stuff, but they don’t listen.

I still get calls every month from some poor soul whos hard drive crashed.

I’ve even done articles on easy ways to backup your data and i bet people still don’t listen

    5. [...] Remember to backup everything and keep multiple copies. Don’t do what Business 2.0 just did and loose their entire next isssue. See story at Bloodhound and Techcruch. When I read the news about Business 2.0 loosing the issue I did kinda laugh. I bet somewhere there is loosing their job [...]
