There’s always something to howl about.

Is it sink, swim, or just taking a deep breath to find buoyancy?

It’s Saturday, which means it’s my Sunday, which means it’s my one day off if I’m lucky.  This last month has been the busiest I have seen this year.  The choices of my clients, both on the buying and listing side have seemed more challenging now than I have ever seen.  Well, that’s not entirely true, many buyers have had no problem sitting on the fence.  On top of that, the opportunities that have been presented to me have be overly scrutinized this week.  I was out to dinner last night with some guests from out of town when it hit me.  The stress and lack of sleep has had me going around acting somewhat zombie like,  I literally responded to the Maitre ds question of “how are you this evening?” with a “nnnnyaeh”.  The obviousness of my failing condition was now as apparent as the gibberish expelled from my throat.

Now before this comes across an absolute whining session for me to vent off the frustrations of my life at the moment, let me tell you that I have the tools to navigate rough waters.  I’ve been here before, as we all have.  The bumps along the way keep it interesting if nothing else, right?   The unpredictable events the follow poor decision making are ones that can be reversed or taken into a more positive direction given the awareness of the direction of said bonehead moves.  I’ve never thought that it was helpful to beat one’s self up over what could be a mistake.  What I do feel is negligible is witnessing someone (or yourself) having the awareness of a mistake and keeping that action on the same path.  This, a good friend of mine would say is like sticking your head in the oven only to find that it’s too hot for a head, and then going  back again the next day to try it again and still find it’s still too warm…. though I could never figure out why somebody wanted stick their head the oven, the lesson was not lost on me.

Simplicity is always my best fix.  Making Read more

Open sourcing and spiking the punchbowl with anarchism. REBarCamp is birthed as a user generated unconference and it absolutely rocks!

There’s no question that I felt a lot of anxiety in having possibly two hundred people show up for a BarCamp event without a “well structured agenda”. Nearly the entire event was created by using a variety of social media tools, our fearless unorganizer, Andy Kaufman led the charge into creating an unprecedented event for Real Estate professionals.   The black pearl from REBarCamp is letting go of control and operating without hierarchy can work to generate progressive brainstorming.   The many volunteers and attendees should be real proud of themselves for putting on what was probably the most unique event Real Estate Technology has ever seen.  I wished I had more time to parse some of the data I know that’s being posted to the web right now, but I’m working on transacting 3 of the most challenging deals I’ve had in two years.

The videos below give a post wrap up perspective by a few of the Campers.

Todd Carpenter and BarCamp mastermind Andy Kaufman managed to even get some value despite all the cat herding.

David Gibbons of Zillow, which sponsored Beer for Bloggers downstairs after the event, shares what a vet of social media learned and I think my Greg Swann” sneaks out as I give the Cafe Du Nord a mention. This of course, was recorded after my first celebratory pint of Racer Ale.

Many thanks to all of the amazing sponsors, volunteers, and participants for making this happen. I’m looking forward to gathering some more feedback as it comes in.

Being a part of Social Media does not mean contributing to the 3,000 advertising messages the average person recieves everyday.

Sure, the below slideshare will come across a bit heavy handed, but the facts are real.  Exercise choice by filling in the asterisks with either one of my favorites.  One (for the sci-fi fans out there) the over used intensifier from Battlestar Galactica.  Or two, remember that you are reading this on a blog and choose one of the late George Carlin’s 7 dirty words (NSFW version).  Our freedoms are precious and not shared world wide by any means.

Now, if you heard what was spoken at the Heard then it’s how passionately the message was delivered.  Ever since your chosen dalliance after logging on became more than checking email and playing mine-sweeper, everyone has been asking a lot of the same questions.  Only now instead of dropping some type and waiting … waiting … waiting  for a response, we have a variety of platforms to communicate on by chat, video, and even fantasy character.  But who’s listening in Real Estate?

If your clients are not asking to connect with you via a variety of social media, the day will come soon enough.  If you are interested with dealing with what we are calling the Millennials or Gen-Y at all then pay real close attention to slides 38 – 44.  “Tomorrows consumers are today’s digital natives”.  “96% of them have joined a social networks and they don’t care about your ad.  They care about what their friends think”.

So what are you doing to get on board?   For me it’s testing and exploring different platforms.  It’s asking those I meet what they are using to communicate.   Your mileage will vary given your market and demographics, but there is a certainty in that your presence, your reputation, and your voice could be working for you 24 hrs. a day.

“Content is the new democracy, and we the people are ensuring that our voices are heard”

Allow me to further the B-day round of toasts at Bloodhound by introducing my relationship to these very pages.

It is with great pleasure that I’m allowed to share thoughts on the pages on Bloodhound.  You see, I have been a long time reader of the posts that put thought to action in Real Estate the way no other blog does.  My interest go back to turning to the web to try and find clues to help with marketing as a newb to Real Estate.  The requisite “Realtor type” mags et al did not cut it for me from the begininng.  Already finding success with buying and selling merchandise, reading the Times, and do I dare say dating through the web, I knew that at least trying to leverage the power of my trusty notebook to crush the competition was worth looking into.  What I found at the time were plenty of shiny buttons to poke at and play with.  I must have bookmarked upwards of 500+ pages of plans, actions, and helpful hints on RE I thought might be of interest.

When it came down to it, the one thing that mattered is what I found on the blog pages of the Real Esate community.  No one did it better than those here that howled.  Aside from shadowing my broker as he wheeled his vehicle throughout the hills of SF and walked and talked the business, reading  and getting involved in the discussions that take place on these very pages are what motivated me to win.  The creative thinking and ideas that we come up with when we are challenged to the fullest is what gives birth to opportunity.   The contributors that currently write here and have passed through have given me giant shoulders to stand on.  They are passionate entrepreneurs of the new medium of Real Estate technology.  We are still far into the early days of blogging, and we know how slow our industry has been to keep up.

With all that said, I personally know my way pretty well when it comes to all things social media and the like Read more
