It’s official, Yahoo, the original search brand, is outsourcing its search function to Microsoft. I don’t think either Microsoft or Yahoo had a choice. It’s a shotgun marriage.

Those work out all the time, right?

Coming out with something that is noticeably better than Google’s Search experience is the only way anyone will  take significant search audience share from them, because despite all the hype around Tweets and FB, Search is still the fundamental App that makes the Web useful and people need a real reason to switch from what they like and are used to.

Failing that (as Microsoft  has with every incremental redesign of their search offering, including Bing), Redmond probably figured why not buy a solid, if distant, second place?

Yahoo knows how this works: A combination of loyalty and laziness is the only reason they still have enough users that Microsoft is even interested in this deal.

So what does this mean for your SEM efforts?

As Wired points out in a good take on this deal, “…by capturing one opposing army, (Microsoft) dramatically simplifies the battle lines and creates a two-sided conflict.”

Google knows how to hit Microsoft where it hurts, most recently by forcing Microsoft to sacrifice its cash cow, Office, by making it available on line next year to counter Google Docs. So far, Microsoft has not been able to land an equally  solid punch on Google.

That has to make Steve Ballmer’s forehead all purple with the veins popping out, like the evil aliens in the original Star Trek pilot. I don’t think I could work for Ballmer. I first saw those aliens when I was like 6, and I still have nightmares about them.

One way Steve could finally get some would be to introduce serious competition in contextual text ads, the Web advertising form that Google invented and the only ad model that works on the Web (Exhibit A: They made Google $5.5 Billion last Qtr.).

True, but if you want Google to wake up and smell the roses (or in my case, espresso).. you need to give them what they want.
Some documents need time stamps – yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss-what-it-is.xxx implicitly sorts in chronological order. 24 is too intense for me, but a great way to time stamp.

Most articles are best renamed with keywords.  When we travelled to London, I created a PDF of the London Tube, emailed it to my iPhone .Mac account, and had a nice bright scalable map easy to read on my iPhone in dark, cold and wet London.
Here’s the file name I used:

uk_london_tube_map.pdf

I gives me everything I need to find the file on my computer.  Being a digital kind of guy, I use the 2 letter International Internet Codes or State Code as a prefix.

Back in ancient times (i.e. before taking the Bloodhound Unchained class last week), I would have used a more cryptic code, but Greg’s engenu batch creates ALT tags from the file name, so all my file names will now have embedded keywords for SEO juice.

But the bits are free.. no extra charge for using more of them…though I would like someone to tell me if I need to stay within an XXX character limit.

Adobe Bridge (Mac & Windows) is superb for organizing and renaming photos and movies.

Part 2 of 4: Tracking Goals in google Docs.

Setting goals: whatever gets measured gets improved. So, if we want to get after it, live a life of splendor, we want to track some of our inputs, the 2.0 way.

It’s lightweight, it’s custom, and it utterly rocks.

We want to track stuff so we live in reality. Ask failure agents and they always never know quite how much business they’ve done. They always rounded up, and I call that agent math. This takes that excuse away and lets you create the reality you will live in.

We’ll soon know what pace we are on. This one’s short, the next one is longer. It’s recorded on viddler at 800×600 res, and i think you can pop it out without leaving the site. Thanks to SnapZ pro for making the video:

The way to do it in the cell is =SUM(OTHERSHEET!C2:C200) where ‘other sheet,’ is the other sheet you are messing with by name. I rename them because of minor glitches across browsers.

Do You “Knol”? Utilizing a new Google Offering

It looks like Problogger has mixed opinions on the launch of Google’s Knol. Meanwhile, Seer Interactive shows Knol already ranking for some keywords.

Search Engine Land compares Knol to Wikipedia and gives you step by step instruction on setting up your own Knols. I love the ability to have a collaboration but be able to moderate and control content edits. I have an ongoing feud on Wikipedia with someone who does not feel that a link to a hyper local blog full of community information belongs on Wikipedia – I put it on – he takes it off – one year later – 15 edits and I get incredible traffic to my local blog from Wikipedia. I just have to check it every few weeks!

For me it Knol is another tool in my arsenal of online marketing. I’ve got my start and am committing to adding fresh information at least weekly. Currently I’m ranked number 3 for the search “Real Estate” and the only one for “Athens, Georgia” who wants to join me? What content do you think will be most applicable and how do you plan to leverage this new tool?
