Centuries later as the War Between The States wound down, Fort McDowell was established along the banks of the Rio Verde River. Colorful adventurer Jack Swilling recognized the opportunity the nearby abandoned canals offered for raising supplies for the troops. From his Swilling Irrigating and Canal Company the busy little farming community of Phoenix rose from the empty desert.
