That Which We Call a &#8220;Job&#8221; Summit, by Any Other Name&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>&#8220;When <em>I<\/em> use a word,&#8221; Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, &#8220;it means just what I choose it to mean &#8212; neither more nor less.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The question is,&#8221; said Alice, &#8220;whether you <em>can<\/em> make words mean so many different things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The question is,&#8221; said Humpty Dumpty, &#8220;which is to be master &#8212; that&#8217;s all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Through The Looking Glass<\/em> &#8211; Chapter VI<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Lewis Carroll<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Small business accounts for over 65% of all new jobs.\u00a0 If you wanted to create new jobs (I mean, if that was your <em>actual <\/em>goal and not just a cover story) you might decide to sit down with people who represent small business interests.\u00a0 The guest list for an actual, according to Hoyle, &#8220;Job Summit&#8221; then, might look like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Chamber of Commerce<\/li>\n<li>The National Federation of Independent Business<\/li>\n<li>The National Association of Manufactures<\/li>\n<li>and so on&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If, on the other hand, your <em>actual <\/em>goal was to consolidate power and become the<em> de facto<\/em> benefactor of jobs, you might want to sit down with the people who kill small business on a regular basis.\u00a0 To keep things simple, you should probably limit yourself to those with whom you are already sleeping.\u00a0 The guest list might look like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Service Employees International Union (S.E.I.U.)<\/li>\n<li>The American Federation of Teachers<\/li>\n<li>The United Steel Workers Union<\/li>\n<li>Policy wonks with absolutely no real world business experience<\/li>\n<li>And of course, Paul Krugman (an economist\/columnist so far to the left he can&#8217;t ever be right)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Which list do you think showed up for the White House &#8220;Job&#8221; Summit?<\/p>\n<p>To paraphrase Lewis Carroll (and, quite possibly, President Obama?):<br \/>\n&#8220;It <em>is<\/em> a job summit damn it!
