{"id":12154,"date":"2010-06-06T07:42:45","date_gmt":"2010-06-06T14:42:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=12154"},"modified":"2010-06-06T08:33:07","modified_gmt":"2010-06-06T15:33:07","slug":"another-life-lesson-courtesy-of-mlb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/12154\/another-life-lesson-courtesy-of-mlb\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Life Lesson Courtesy of MLB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love sports. \u00a0My wife &#8211; well, she pretty much despises them. \u00a0Why, she&#8217;ll ask, do I so often waste my evenings watching a game between two teams I barely care about? \u00a0I typically reply with &#8220;Sports are the ultimate in reality TV&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It seems every week or two we&#8217;re dealing with another example of athletes making complete shit storms of their lives. \u00a0Tiger Woods. \u00a0Ben Roethlisberger. \u00a0It&#8217;s a long list.<\/p>\n<p>However, this week something happened that inspired me. \u00a0It was a complete injustice &#8211; a robbery. \u00a0Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga did something no other Detroit Tiger has ever accomplished. \u00a0He threw a Perfect Game. \u00a0Heck, the feat has only been accomplished 20 or so times in the history of Major League Baseball. \u00a0Only, on the way into the history books, something happened. \u00a0In case you haven&#8217;t seen it, you can find the <a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/video\/play.jsp?content_id=8616789\" target=\"_blank\">video replay here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The story, however, only begins when Galarraga&#8217;s foot steps on the first base bag. \u00a0The juicier &#8211; and more compelling &#8211; story comes out of the aftermath.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<div id=\"attachment_12155\" style=\"width: 433px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/galarraga-joyce.h2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12155\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12155\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/galarraga-joyce.h2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/galarraga-joyce.h2.jpg 423w, https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/galarraga-joyce.h2-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: from nbcsports.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jim Joyce, the umpire who missed the historic call was devastated when he saw the TV replay:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the [stuff] out of it,&#8221; Joyce said, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires&#8217; locker room. &#8220;I just cost that kid a perfect game.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No excuses. \u00a0No attempt at rationalization. \u00a0It was a bang-bang play that routinely gets botched by first-base umpires. \u00a0If this happened in the 3rd inning rather than with two outs in the 9th, we wouldn&#8217;t even be talking about it. \u00a0And the wonderful life lesson wouldn&#8217;t have been shared:<\/p>\n<p>1) \u00a0Jim Joyce owns up to his mistake. \u00a0He then offers a sincere and heartfelt apology to Galarraga and all Detroit Tigers fans who were broken hearted that evening. \u00a0Not two weeks later, but immediately.<\/p>\n<p>2) \u00a0Armando Galarraga accepts the apology and takes the high road. \u00a0\u201cI have a lot of respect for the man.
