\nThough I’ve Belted\u00a0You and\u00a0Flayed You, By the Livin’ Gawd\u00a0That Made You;<\/strong>
\nYou’ve Made a Worser Man of Me, Socialism<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

“And a\u00a0woman is only a\u00a0woman, but a good\u00a0cigar is a smoke”\u00a0 (from The Betrothed<\/a>).\u00a0 I have loved Rudyard Kipling from the very first time I read Gunga Din<\/a>.\u00a0 His pace and pattern appeal to me, as does his archaic sense of manhood.\u00a0 I have argued before, and dare say would do so again quite successfully, that his\u00a0poem If <\/a><\/em>\u00a0is among the finest pieces\u00a0ever written in the English language.\u00a0 Of all the inspirational articles I have written and the many orations I have given, much time could have been saved had I simply gone in, recited If<\/em> <\/a>and walked out.\u00a0 If you have never read it, stop what you are doing now\u00a0and do so.\u00a0 The answer to just about every event you may encounter in your life is contained in that poem.<\/p>\n

This post, however, is not about Kipling’s great work If<\/em>.\u00a0 (If it were, I would certainly link to my own, real estate based homage to wisdom<\/a>, and I’ve done no such thing.)\u00a0 No, this post is about another poem Kipling wrote, one I am chagrined to admit I only recently discovered.\u00a0 More mortifying still, I discovered it only because Glenn Beck is using a couple of lines from this poem to plug a new book of his.\u00a0 (I’m not denigrating Mr. Beck, only lamenting the discovery of fine art through it’s crass commercialization.)<\/p>\n

The poem refers to Copybook Headings<\/em> and I was unsure what those were.\u00a0 For the one or two of you out there as simple as I am, copybooks were primers used by school children to perfect their penmanship.\u00a0 Across the top of each page was written a Biblical passage or similar lesson of moral imperative.\u00a0 The children would copy the line over and over on the page below,\u00a0thus improving their cursive and at the same internalizing certain truths.\u00a0 Truths that, according to Mr. Kipling, are forgotten at our own peril.<\/p>\n
