{"id":12506,"date":"2010-06-30T13:57:02","date_gmt":"2010-06-30T20:57:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=12506"},"modified":"2010-06-30T13:57:02","modified_gmt":"2010-06-30T20:57:02","slug":"the-evolution-of-a-salesman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/12506\/the-evolution-of-a-salesman\/","title":{"rendered":"The Evolution of a Salesman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I graduated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jou.ufl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">college<\/a> in 1992, I couldn&#8217;t wait to put what little I&#8217;d learned into play.\u00a0 Fortunately, I had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knightimages.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">role model<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;Who We Are&#8221;\/&#8221;People&#8221;\/&#8221;Ken Jones&#8221;) willing to let me\u00a0shadow him\u00a0like a puppy dog twelve hours a day.\u00a0 Before long, I became\u00a0a pretty solid &#8220;ad man&#8221;.\u00a0 But it wasn&#8217;t the media planning or copywriting that inspired me.\u00a0 It was consulting with our clients.\u00a0 It was listening to their problems and challenges &#8211; and finding\u00a0creative ways to solve them.\u00a0 Problem was, the company I worked for at the time was fat and happy.\u00a0 They had &#8220;enough&#8221; business to pay for our waterfront office space and their German automobiles.<\/p>\n<p>I thought that mentality sucked.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I was low man on the totem pole.\u00a0 Frankly, I&#8217;m not even sure my status\u00a0qualified for a head on the totem pole.\u00a0 This was a status I\u00a0gratefully would\u00a0never relinquish.\u00a0 Yet,\u00a0typically it was either me or Ken who opened shop every morning and the two of us would inevitably lock up every night.<\/p>\n<p>After finishing the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamidade.gov\/portofmiami\/\" target=\"_blank\">Port of Miami<\/a> print media plan three months into the year &#8211; and by the way, you ain&#8217;t lived until you&#8217;ve duked out a 12-insertion deal with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inboundlogistics.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Inbound Logistics<\/a> magazine &#8211; something strange happened&#8230; I ran out of things to do.\u00a0 We in the real estate\/mortgage profession can&#8217;t even fathom this ever happening, right?\u00a0 I was getting a paycheck every two weeks and was doing absolutely nothing to earn it.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, my ass-sitting\u00a0didn&#8217;t bother the owners of our ad agency very much.\u00a0 But it bothered the hell out of me.\u00a0 We needed some new clients &#8211;
