{"id":13012,"date":"2010-08-16T17:59:50","date_gmt":"2010-08-17T00:59:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=13012"},"modified":"2010-08-17T07:55:03","modified_gmt":"2010-08-17T14:55:03","slug":"the-end-product-of-appeasing-the-collective-chris-pearson-gpl-and-matt-mullenweg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/13012\/the-end-product-of-appeasing-the-collective-chris-pearson-gpl-and-matt-mullenweg\/","title":{"rendered":"The End Product of Appeasing the Collective: Chris Pearson, GPL and Matt Mullenweg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post contains a Bawld Guy axiom, some tech wank, and more.<\/p>\n<p>For those people that do what I do (what is it that I do&#8211;if anything? \u00a0I often wonder), there was kind of a big debate this past month. \u00a0It involved WordPress&#8211;open source GPL software&#8211;Thesis, formerly proprietary software that capitulated to no avail. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ma.tt\">Matt Mullenweg, <\/a>an unstable genius that seems hell bent on harming his community (more on that in a moment), <a href=\"http:\/\/pearsonified.com\">Chris Pearson,<\/a> a narcissistic genius that seems hell bent on blowing a hole in his leg because <em>you<\/em> can&#8217;t tell him what to do.<\/p>\n<p>The gist: the Thesis theme (a theme that I deliver something like 60% of my sites in) was not GPL. \u00a0Despite the fact the only lawyers that claimed that it needed to be worked for a free software foundation, AutoMATTic was pursuing them to become GPL. \u00a0Ma.tt started calling Chris out on Twitter, not suing, no, just acting like a goon. \u00a0There was a delightful Mixergy where <a href=\"http:\/\/mixergy.com\/chris-pearson-matt-mullenweg\/\">Chris Pearson and @@photomatt fought amongst themselves.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I love me some good wank as much as the next guy, <a href=\"http:\/\/genuinechris.posterous.com\/matt-mullenweg-fouls-his-nest-undermines-his\">so I had to chime in<\/a>. \u00a0 I didn&#8217;t add much new&#8211;the whole situation was utterly ugly all around and very unfortunate, but some of the WP types dropped in to comment (and I love posterous for its simplicity. \u00a0But I digress.)<\/p>\n<p>Our dear friend WP Tutorial god Ben Cook <a href=\"http:\/\/wpblogger.com\/matt-mullenweg-gpl-king.php\">summarizes<\/a> it better than I do for those of us \u00a0that love a nerd war.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Point, If I have One: Don&#8217;t Comply With The Hive, They Never Stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So after a lot of wrangling&#8211;and even a <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2010\/07\/22\/thesis-relents\/\">Mashable<\/a> write up, <a href=\"http:\/\/copyblogger.com\">Copyblogger Brian Clark <\/a>(who<a href=\"http:\/\/technosailor.aaronbrazell.com\/2010\/07\/29\/exclusive-interview-brian-clark-leaves-diythemesthesis-theme\/\"> dissolved his partnership<\/a> shortly after this incident) got Pearson to<strong> stop it already and adopt GPL<\/strong>&#8211;and probably that should have been done to begin \u00a0with for practical reasons. \u00a0Note: I hate when people try and force my hand. \u00a0Huzzah for Harmony, and Ma.tt was initially <a href=\"http:\/\/dvlprs.com\/photomatt\/statuses\/19290666097\">thrilled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But not so fast, last week (meant to post this a while ago, left Macbook in Seattle) \u00a0opened another salvo against a compliant opponent, and like France in WWI, Matt is \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ma.tt\/2010\/08\/syn-thesis-3-switchers\/#comment-483467\">demanding reparations<\/a>. \u00a0 This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/13012\/the-end-product-of-appeasing-the-collective-chris-pearson-gpl-and-matt-mullenweg\/#more-13012\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post contains a Bawld Guy axiom, some tech wank, and more.
