So what do you see when you look in the mirror?\u00a0 No doubt as a real estate agent the way you present yourself is important, but is that all you see?\u00a0 In a standard mirror, maybe it is.\u00a0 “Let’s see: short sleeve, button down shirt with\u00a0yellow plaid design: check.\u00a0 Power\u00a0red necktie, wide, hanging half way down my ample belly: check.\u00a0 Name tag with alphabet soup of certifications, right side up and cleaned of (most of) last night’s pasta sauce: check.\u00a0 Roger Rocket – real estate superman – reporting for duty.”\u00a0 But seriously, there are other kinds of mirrors you know…<\/p>\n

A Look Back…?<\/strong>
\nLast week, in my article on Temporal Awareness<\/a>, I\u00a0talked a little about\u00a0how past and present do not actually exist.\u00a0\u00a0I used the example of someone saying something about us behind our backs –\u00a0the visceral reaction, the anger –\u00a0only to discover they never said anything!\u00a0\u00a0We cause ourselves stress over things that never exist.\u00a0 We create realities and emotions over events that never happen.\u00a0\u00a0These responses can, however,\u00a0be turned into a wonderful tool.\u00a0 And by\u00a0“wonderful” I mean a gut-wrenching look at what’s inside of us that we are desperately trying to hide from both the outside world and ourselves.\u00a0\u00a0That<\/em> kind of wonderful.<\/p>\n

The Mirror Effect<\/strong>
\nThe Mirror Effect is a way to recognize what’s happening and take a peek at what’s causing our emotional response.\u00a0 It also helps us stay in the present.\u00a0\u00a0(Though, truth be told, you have to\u00a0be present enough to engage\u00a0The Mirror Effect in the first place.)\u00a0 Suppose someone said something hurtful to you – an observation –\u00a0that you knew in your heart to be inaccurate.\u00a0 For example: “Sean, you were never the athlete you like to think you were.”\u00a0 Our reaction to that would be pretty subdued; we might even chuckle a little.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 In my example, because I know who I am in that realm; I know what I accomplished and even how I ranked.\u00a0 I’ve accepted the changes that come with moving past one’s athletic prime, but that does not diminish the truth of my vision.\u00a0 When we are secure in this regard, comment means little and garners little reaction.<\/p>\n
