It\u2019s always<\/em> dangerous \u2013 and not a little misleading \u2013 to extrapolate a whole from a part.\u00a0 One of the problems facing the real estate industry is a phantom stereotype \u2013 generally negative \u2013 applied to all agents, when anyone in the business knows that the range spans the genius to the inept, the scrupulously honest to the corrupt.\u00a0 I\u2019d argue high professionalism for most, but in three short years in the business I\u2019ve run into the gamut.<\/p>\n

So I understand the pitfalls of where I\u2019m going with this, but I\u2019m going anyway:<\/p>\n

Do law schools really have a required Applied Condescension<\/em> class; and why is it so many attorneys have a self regard inversely proportional to their actual worth?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I admit some of this is anecdotal and personal: the only attorney I\u2019ve ever had to hire I also had to fire; what she\u2019d failed to accomplish in six months I managed on my own in six days. Recommended by a friend, she overpromised, under delivered and grossly overcharged. When I told her on her last billing I wouldn\u2019t pay until she provided an itemization \u2013 which she never provided \u2013 she tried the intimidation game.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 Oh, my, it didn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n

But much more recently and pertinent: First, there was this \u2013 Buying without an agent<\/a> \u2013 written by an attorney at Rain City Guide<\/a>.\u00a0 Entirely self serving, badly argued with serious errors of omission, it generated some pleasant acrimony in the comment section \u2013 numbering over 150 \u2013 as well as a follow up rebuttal<\/a>.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to parse the whole thing, but you get the tone from the last sentence:<\/p>\n

Regardless, for hundreds of\u00a0dollars, you can save 3% on the purchase price, while getting legal services from an attorney, not an agent.<\/em><\/p>\n

This is just another verse in an emerging chapter:\u00a0 Save money and get better representation<\/em> by using an attorney instead of a real estate agent!\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Hey, who cares about home values, sewer scopes, oil tank decommissioning or elevation certs when you have this argument: \u201cI\u2019m an attorney, you\u2019re not!\u201d<\/p>\n
