{"id":2087,"date":"2007-10-24T08:58:16","date_gmt":"2007-10-24T15:58:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=2087"},"modified":"2007-10-24T11:35:53","modified_gmt":"2007-10-24T18:35:53","slug":"socratic-dialogue-deductive-reasoning-bhb-and-the-state-of-real-estate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/2087\/socratic-dialogue-deductive-reasoning-bhb-and-the-state-of-real-estate\/","title":{"rendered":"Socratic Dialogue, Deductive Reasoning, BHB and the State of Real Estate."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[I was just finishing this up when I read Greg\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=2086\">terrific post<\/a>.\u00a0 Timing in life and all that\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>My first jaunt into online polemics was in the early nineties, the topic animal rights.\u00a0 The Animal Liberation Front was active in the Northwest \u2013 burning fur farms and research labs to prove the efficacy of their argument \u2013 and my (then) wife was involved with the breeding and showing of dogs, the kind of thing that worked a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/True-Believer-Thoughts-Movements-Perennial\/dp\/0060505915\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3\/002-1135444-4635211?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1192823118&amp;sr=8-3\">True Believer<\/a> into lather.<\/p>\n<p>Then, of course, it wasn\u2019t blogs, but\u00a0 newsgroups \u2013 talk.politics.animals, as I recall \u2013 and it should come as no surprise that conversations tended to get a little, well, testy.\u00a0 I actually took a moderator position for a short time, part of my job to write, every third post or so, a plea of the \u201cCan\u2019t we all just get along?\u201d variety, which would settle things down, but never for much longer than twenty minutes.<\/p>\n<p>[One can tolerate only so much.\u00a0A reader had logged in to pour out his heart: He was a teacher in a middle school that, for a fundraiser, had staged a pig kissing contest.\u00a0 The kids loved it, but the teacher was traumatized by the humiliation caused the pigs; he\u2019d gone home and cried himself to sleep.\u00a0 What could he do to make others understand?\u00a0 I was asked to step down due to the insensitivity of my reply.]<\/p>\n<p>Turning someone already steeped in the dogma is impossible, but there are tools available to convince the fence sitters:\u00a0 The first thing I did was read the literature, then I downloaded and printed out \u2013 I still have the somewhat yellowed copy within arm\u2019s length of where I type \u2013 a list of forty three logical fallacies.<\/p>\n<p>Dialogue requires order.<\/p>\n<p>====<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the web and blogs have managed to define discourse down even further.\u00a0 \u00a0And \u2013 who\u2019d have thought? \u2013 it\u2019s even beginning to infect RE blogs.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s why Rain City Guide\u2019s Dustin Luther issued his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raincityguide.com\/2007\/09\/11\/rules-for-rain-city-guide-contributors\/\">preemptive admonition<\/a>,\u00a0 brilliant in its brevity:\u00a0 Attack ideas, not people; no personal promotion.
