1.\u00a0Sell a crisis<\/em>.\u00a0 It can be real, it can be almost real, it can be imaginary, but sell it apocalyptically.\u00a0 Over-population\/global famine has been an especially popular one, Paul Erlich having predicted it every five years since 1968 (but this <\/em>time he\u2019s serious!), following in the footsteps of Thomas Malthus, who first predicted the population would outstrip the food supply in 1798. [Now, of course, we have global warming, global cooling<\/a> having proved a disappointment.]<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Set yourself up as the one person\/group\/coalition\/association that can solve the crisis, if only people will give you enough money and behave exactly as you instruct.\u00a0<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Demand sacrifice, open a bank account, and wait for the marketplace to work.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0When it doesn\u2019t, legislate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Bossy Visionary confidently knows what\u2019s better for people than people.<\/p>\n

Portland, Oregon is fertile breeding ground for Bossy Visionaries.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Portland doesn\u2019t wear the progressive<\/em> label; it wallows in it.\u00a0 The County Commission and the City Council cattily compete with each other for the \u2018most like San Francisco\u2019 award, often to the exclusion of proposing anything actually, well, sane.\u00a0 Thus the county a few years ago began unilaterally issuing gay marriage licenses, notwithstanding the fact that it wasn\u2019t legal, wasn\u2019t popular, and there\u2019s nothing worse than giving someone something only to have it taken away, which the Supreme Court predictably did.\u00a0 Thus the City Council is in the process of changing the name of a major thoroughfare in North Portland from \u2018Interstate Ave.\u2019 to \u2018Caesar Chavez\u2019 Ave., notwithstanding the fact the neighborhoods through which Interstate runs are an olio of Polish, Indian, African American, old, young, hip and not, but less than 8% Latino; and notwithstanding the fact that those neighborhoods, especially the businesses, are overwhelmingly opposed to the change.\u00a0 [To the petulant mayor \u2013 he did the perfect \u2018terrible twos\u2019 impression and stomped out of a Council meeting when it looked like one of the key votes had changed \u2013 all that matters is the du jour grievance group, the fawning press that will be generated in the process, and one more notch in the totem erected to the politically gooey.]<\/p>\n
