{"id":2242,"date":"2007-11-20T23:05:16","date_gmt":"2007-11-21T06:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=2242"},"modified":"2007-11-20T23:20:10","modified_gmt":"2007-11-21T06:20:10","slug":"ex-post-facto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/2242\/ex-post-facto\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex Post Facto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I purposely did <em>not<\/em>\u00a0go to law school because I purposely did <em>not<\/em> want to become a lawyer.&#8221; I say this a lot to people, usually when they ask me if I&#8217;m an attorney, which is more often than you might think. I actually had to mutter those\u00a0very words\u00a0last Sunday but\u00a0I&#8217;ll address that particular exchange in a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be\u00a0misled by the mug shot in the sidebar. Beneath the Kangol and behind the\u00a0shades (a vacation shot in Cannes <em>btw<\/em>, and not my\u00a0everyday <em>accoutre<\/em>) exists a living,\u00a0if not waning, example\u00a0of the state college system of Pennsylvania; Slippery Rock to be precise. And I can\u00a0safely go on record to state (since most of them have probably passed on by now) that some of the very brightest alcoholic, if not academic, minds were tenured there during my own concurrent, seven year run; Over 60% of\u00a0our department&#8217;s predominantly male faculty had Ivy League credentials, most of whoms <em>wives <\/em>could drink the average shore leave sailor under the table. And much like a sanctimonious <em>non<\/em>smoker exiting a smoke filled room, the residual, if not secondary\u00a0animus,\u00a0still lingers&#8211;even\u00a0decades later. That, and a knee jerk tendency to counter-respond with a quip when the right moment calls for it.<\/p>\n<p>That era, if you recall, was a big,\u00a0political, mid-1970s mess and the fact that Nixon was out, the Vietnam War\u00a0had just ended, and the GI Bill was in full swing, only deepened the already exisitng social chasm on campus. Having <em>not<\/em> been in the military myself, I had never, up to that point in time,\u00a0even <em>imagined<\/em> what it\u00a0might take\u00a0(mentally) to annihilate an\u00a0entire\u00a0village, (which sadly <em>wasn&#8217;t<\/em> the case with a few of the gentlemen\u00a0I shared a house with)\u00a0much less be\u00a0awarded\u00a0an all expense paid, four year educational ride, with a VA housing rider to boot. (This however, <em>was<\/em> the case\u00a0with\u00a0everyone in the\u00a0joint\u00a0but me.)<\/p>\n<p>And by the way,\u00a0that <em>is <\/em>how<em> <\/em>my veteran housemates all\u00a0referred to\u00a0our ramshackle residence; &#8216;The Joint.&#8217; One\u00a0frat boy&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Animal House<\/em> is but\u00a0another Viet Vet&#8217;s joint and we proved as much by renting the basement out to the TKEs for a barrel of beer a month until the town eventually condemned the joint and padlocked the front <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/2242\/ex-post-facto\/#more-2242\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I purposely did not\u00a0go to law school because I purposely did not want to become a lawyer.&#8221; I say this a lot to people, usually when they ask me if I&#8217;m an attorney, which is more often than you might think.
