{"id":2370,"date":"2008-04-10T19:26:40","date_gmt":"2008-04-11T02:26:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=2370"},"modified":"2008-04-11T08:12:30","modified_gmt":"2008-04-11T15:12:30","slug":"just-like-tom-waits-blues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/2370\/just-like-tom-waits-blues\/","title":{"rendered":"Just Like Tom Waits&#8217; Blues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was wandering through a funky used record shop the other week, checking out the price per square foot in the 1890&#8217;s boutique storefront\u00a0(but really\u00a0hoping to get lost in my distant past), when I heard <em>the voice<\/em> for the first time in a decade,\u00a0maybe longer. It was a <em>voice<\/em>\u00a0that has been famously described as\u00a0sounding &#8220;&#8230;like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside and run over with a car.&#8221; I stood without motion as I\u00a0was drawn in by\u00a0the familiar\u00a0guttural\u00a0sonnets\u00a0dripping through the scratchy piped-in speakers of the\u00a0tiny\u00a0alley\u00a0store with its 14 foot tin ceilings, whose lease, according to my listing sheet,\u00a0would expire in less than a month. At that moment, I have to admit, I\u00a0felt more like a nostalgic sap with a $50,000 line of credit than a realtor on a due diligence assignment.<\/p>\n<p>An acrid\u00a0<em>Chex<\/em> mix of sad,\u00a0ironic and romantically laced\u00a0phases\u00a0cured in a molasses melody of piano riffs, circus tent\u00a0trombones, and tubas thickened the air for several minutes at a time before being snuffed out between tracks into an imaginary ashtray of half-smoked <em>Chesterfields.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0And <em>then, <\/em>like the\u00a0unnamed but ubiquitously published\u00a0critic wrote so many years ago, \u00a0<em>&#8216;run over by a car.&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0More than likely,\u00a0an Ol&#8217; 55, if you&#8217;re still\u00a0following my drift.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The young guy behind the antique glass counter wanted to sell me\u00a0an evenly worn Tom Waits vinyl disk, just like the one I used to own, for &#8220;$20 US.&#8221;\u00a0 I told him I didn&#8217;t have\u00a0a turntable anymore, or a tape player of any kind, or even a decent set of speakers worth mentioning\u00a0although I did have a CD player in both of my rides.\u00a0He shook his head and gave me\u00a0a funny look as if to say, <em>&#8220;Dude, nobody listens to CDs anymore.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 Or maybe he was just high. I know <em>I <\/em>probably was at his age.
