What makes the songs of Leonard Cohen work, as an example, is that they&#8217;re so simple musically that there is all the room in the world for the lyric. We listen to a lot of complicated music, but the stuff I love the best isn&#8217;t really music at all, it&#8217;s literature, a thoroughly modern take on lyric poetry.
