I think I was five. Then there was that pre-teen realization of\u00a0what&#8217;s <em>really<\/em> in a (<em>pick one<\/em>): Hot Dog, Pepsi, Twinkie. This was long before 1994 government reforms mandated that food labels be readable on a fifth grade level.<\/p>\n<p>And as best as I can figure, <em>transparency<\/em> in the modern\u00a0<em>Press<\/em>\u00a0probably blossomed\u00a0with the <em>Washinton Post&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0breaking of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/watergate.info\/\"><em>Watergate<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>scandal\u00a0in 1972.\u00a0 Before <em>that<\/em> fateful event, editorial\u00a0dictum pretty much suggested there were just some things the general public ought not know.\u00a0 Unconfirmed rumors?\u00a0Maybe. Back room whispers? For sure. But the butt ugly, hot dog ingredient nasty\u00a0facts? Not so much.<\/p>\n<p>If truth\u00a0in reporting has taught me anything\u00a0over the past\u00a050 years\u00a0it&#8217;s that the deeper one digs into a story, the gnarlier the unearthed details become.\u00a0For\u00a0the longest time\u00a0we masses\u00a0seemed content with mere Orwellian <em>halfspeak<\/em> from\u00a0above only to discover through <em>Newspeak (<\/em>and <em>Newsweek)<\/em>\u00a0that <em>Big Brother<\/em> may in fact, be gay and tapping his\u00a0toes in\u00a0an airport latrine near you.\u00a0Rumor had it that those Kennedy boys would sometimes\u00a0entertain a whole White House pool <em>full<\/em> of bikini clad Twinkies (of a different variety but just as unhealthy, I hear), sipping<em> Cuba libres <\/em>all (<em>Coke<\/em>, no <em>Pepsi),<\/em> and splashing about the presidential grounds while Jackie <em>K<\/em> was off riding horses in Northern Virginia. They <em>say<\/em>&#8230;.the <em>Press<\/em> was\u00a0also invariably present, in close proximity to be sure, and \u00a0sworn to unspoken secrecy in the name of patriotic duty and national <em>security<\/em>, if not<em> fidelity<\/em>; their collective eyes all glazed and bleary, no doubt,\u00a0from looking the other way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was when &#8216;off the record&#8217; meant o<em>ff<\/em>\u00a0 <em>the<\/em> <em>record,<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 I recently posed to a table of family and friends discussing this very subject\u00a0after dinner. A moment of silence passed before the youngest attendee, a second grader, \u00a0posed a question of her own to the group of adults, &#8220;What&#8217;s a record?&#8221;\u00a0 Oh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/2487\/the-blue-stained-dress\/#more-2487\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0&#8230;Come on, how much do you really want to know?
