I\u00a0think I first realized we exist in a quirky, if not passionate\u00a0and divided adult<\/em> society when\u00a0I\u00a0found myself in a\u00a0lecture hall\u00a0observing an assistant\u00a0professor and a fellow graduate student\u00a0nearly coming to blows over a Henry James excerpt from\u00a0the aptly\u00a0titled,\u00a0 An International Episode<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u00a0watched on\u00a0as a confederacy of my peers and elders; some undergrad, some doctoral, some by proxy—chimed in from the gallery\u00a0seats as the two went at each other, a coffee breath’s apart.\u00a0\u00a0Before long, the entire crowd seemed to join in, taking sides on what does and does not<\/em> constitute a cultural faux pas<\/em> and whether James himself, a man already dead <\/em>for 72 years, was a genius or an ass. \u00a0<\/p>\n

It was like a Pulitzer prize fight gone wild, only everyone was wearing turtlenecks and corduroy.\u00a0 I was proctoring the lecture to make up some lost hangover hours from another class.\u00a0 The whole\u00a0Henry James\u00a0dialectic was over my<\/em> head to begin with,\u00a0 so who was I to judge,\u00a0one way or another, who had the longest literary wiener? \u00a0I fancied my<\/em>self a sports writer, a true reporter of facts…(as I understood them, of course.)\u00a0\u00a0That was more than 25 years ago and the memory all but faded away…<\/p>\n

…only to\u00a0resurface this week as I\u00a0got sucked into the\u00a0Comment Section\u00a0vacuum of\u00a0 a thousand faceless internet voices.\u00a0 I think we all know of what I speak so no more\u00a0linkage. \u00a0It intrigues me when I witness, walking past <\/em>the bar of course,\u00a0the same, aforementioned ardor present in, let’s say…\u00a0the wide-screen\u00a0crowd watching a\u00a0televised\u00a0sporting event.\u00a0\u00a0I’m always curious as to why these raving fans, dressed in home team regalia;\u00a0scream, curse and cheer for or against a particular team or athlete (or candidate, for that matter)\u00a0who doesn’t even know they exist.\u00a0Like the Chazz Palminteri\u00a0character, Sonny, \u00a0says to C,\u00a0 in A Bronx Tale, <\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Why you<\/em> care about Mickey Mantle? He don’t care about you…” Willing suspension of disbelief can be, well…disbelievable, I guess.\u00a0<\/p>\n
