One Industry<\/font><\/strong><em><font face=\"Arial\">The Evolution of Online Communities &amp; Networks<\/font><\/em><font face=\"Arial\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\">The first phase of the Internet was surfing or browsing where you just aimlessly wondered until you stumbled onto something of interest.\u00a0 Then, powerful search engines like Google and Yahoo let us sort through the Internet with ease.\u00a0 Now, we are at a third stage where we use the Internet for sharing both personal and business information.\u00a0 We share on blogs and social networks where users interact with the help of technology.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\">Social networking is not a new concept \u2013 the term was coined in 1954.\u00a0 It first hit the web in 1995 with classmates.com and other sites.\u00a0 Later, MySpace and Facebook came along and social networks soared.\u00a0 As of September 2007, 1 in 20 visits to the Internet went to one of the top 20 social networks.\u00a0 Americans spend about 12% of their Internet time on social networking sites.\u00a0 Investors are betting that number will grow dramatically as the value of social sites soars.\u00a0 Microsoft paid $240 million last year for about a 2% stake in Facebook. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\">The report lists 5 examples of on-line communities that are worth looking at:<\/font><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\"><font face=\"Arial\">www.linkedin.com<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\"> \u2013 a business oriented social networking site<\/font><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ning.com\/\"><font face=\"Arial\">www.ning.com<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\"> \u2013 allows users to build their own custom social networks.<\/font><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.squidoo.com\/\"><font face=\"Arial\">www.squidoo.com<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\"> \u2013 this is a network of experts who are sharing their knowledge<\/font><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digg.com\/\"><font face=\"Arial\">www.digg.com<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\"> \u2013 users add stories and if other users like the content, they \u201cdigg\u201d the story or rate it.<\/font><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.secondlife.com\/\"><font face=\"Arial\">www.secondlife.com<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\"> \u2013 this is a virtual world in which you can live and even do business.<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\">Blogs are great places to share and gain knowledge.\u00a0 The report list several blogs, but I would suggest the following as must reads for REALTORS\u00ae in Charlottesville:<\/font><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.varbuzz.com\/\"><font face=\"Arial\">www.varbuzz.com<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\"> \u2013 the official Blog of the State Association of REALTORS\u00ae <\/font><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.inman.com\/blog\"><font face=\"Arial\">www.inman.com\/blog<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\"> &#8211;
