{"id":2997,"date":"2008-04-23T14:39:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-23T21:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=2997"},"modified":"2008-04-24T11:35:17","modified_gmt":"2008-04-24T18:35:17","slug":"a-little-chin-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/2997\/a-little-chin-music\/","title":{"rendered":"A Little Chin Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I once knew an eccentric, rather secretive\u00a0old movie buff named\u00a0Don who could\u00a0determine if a flick was going to be\u00a0a stinker\u00a0just by the\u00a0musical score playing during the opening credits. &#8220;If a film starts off with\u00a0a single\u00a0instrument playing; one guitar strumming, one piano twinkling, one horn of <em>any<\/em> kind&#8211;I get up immediately and demand my money back from the ticket booth,&#8221; he insisted.\u00a0 &#8220;The movie&#8217;s gonna stink.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not quite sure I&#8217;m following you, Don&#8221; I remember glibly saying to him the first time we had this conversation. After all, I\u00a0too considered myself\u00a0a\u00a0surveyor\u00a0of <em>cinematografo arte. \u00a0<\/em>I paused for a moment before continuing, treading lightly onto this oddfellow&#8217;s\u00a0little patch of expertise.\u00a0I had been\u00a0forewarned not to let the\u00a0dyed gray temples and Hawaiian shirt and sandals fool me.\u00a0Not even in December.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What about <em>Brian&#8217;s Song<\/em>?&#8221; I asked, tossing a sentimental softball to the old guy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Stinker.&#8221; Don.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Love Story<\/em>?&#8221; The set-up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Open a window<em>.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0Don.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The Godfather<\/em>?&#8221; Brushback.\u00a0 A little chin music.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brando isn&#8217;t even Italian. <em>Please..<\/em>.&#8221; Definitely Don (if not Corleone).<\/p>\n<p>It was difficult <em>not<\/em> to judge the man for his quirky\u00a0appearance\u00a0and\u00a0curious ways, <em>or<\/em> to predict how\u00a0he would or would not respond to\u00a0any particular topic.\u00a0 A gentleman bachelor of sorts and lifelong Chicago resident, Don\u00a0owned a tiny, &#8216;evenings only&#8217;\u00a0coffee house (called <em>Don&#8217;s)<\/em> where myself and a few\u00a0close buddies\u00a0would\u00a0occasionally\u00a0pass the remaining\u00a0hours\u00a0of late 1999 (and possibly\u00a0<em>existence<\/em>\u00a0if the worse case Y2K\u00a0 scenario played out as predicted). And perhaps\u00a0&#8216;owned&#8217; is the wrong word anyway. After all, Don never really ever <em>owned<\/em> anything.
