I once knew an eccentric, rather secretive\u00a0old movie buff named\u00a0Don who could\u00a0determine if a flick was going to be\u00a0a stinker\u00a0just by the\u00a0musical score playing during the opening credits. “If a film starts off with\u00a0a single\u00a0instrument playing; one guitar strumming, one piano twinkling, one horn of any<\/em> kind–I get up immediately and demand my money back from the ticket booth,” he insisted.\u00a0 “The movie’s gonna stink.”<\/p>\n

“Not quite sure I’m following you, Don” I remember glibly saying to him the first time we had this conversation. After all, I\u00a0too considered myself\u00a0a\u00a0surveyor\u00a0of cinematografo arte. \u00a0<\/em>I paused for a moment before continuing, treading lightly onto this oddfellow’s\u00a0little patch of expertise.\u00a0I had been\u00a0forewarned not to let the\u00a0dyed gray temples and Hawaiian shirt and sandals fool me.\u00a0Not even in December.<\/p>\n

“What about Brian’s Song<\/em>?” I asked, tossing a sentimental softball to the old guy.<\/p>\n

“Stinker.” Don.<\/p>\n

“Love Story<\/em>?” The set-up.<\/p>\n

“Open a window.<\/em>”\u00a0\u00a0Don.<\/p>\n

“The Godfather<\/em>?” Brushback.\u00a0 A little chin music.<\/p>\n

“Brando isn’t even Italian. Please..<\/em>.” Definitely Don (if not Corleone).<\/p>\n

It was difficult not<\/em> to judge the man for his quirky\u00a0appearance\u00a0and\u00a0curious ways, or<\/em> to predict how\u00a0he would or would not respond to\u00a0any particular topic.\u00a0 A gentleman bachelor of sorts and lifelong Chicago resident, Don\u00a0owned a tiny, ‘evenings only’\u00a0coffee house (called Don’s)<\/em> where myself and a few\u00a0close buddies\u00a0would\u00a0occasionally\u00a0pass the remaining\u00a0hours\u00a0of late 1999 (and possibly\u00a0existence<\/em>\u00a0if the worse case Y2K\u00a0 scenario played out as predicted). And perhaps\u00a0‘owned’ is the wrong word anyway. After all, Don never really ever owned<\/em> anything. None of us do,\u00a0according to him.<\/p>\n

Our little man group, bachelors\u00a0of\u00a0various sorts\u00a0in our own rights at that juncture in life,\u00a0would trek north and westward on Public Transit (as to save our respective vehicles from vandalism, theft, or fire bomb in the Gangster Disciple<\/em> controlled ‘hood)\u00a0to the\u00a0tiny storefront; single and alone in its <\/em>own right, tuck pointed away\u00a0between\u00a0tenement walk-ups and elevated train trestles,\u00a0to engage in\u00a0heightened conversation, cigarette smoking, and Scrabble<\/em> with coffee, cake,\u00a0and dictionaries–the only way to play the game as far as I’m concerned. And<\/em> of course, for gentleman Don and his quirky points of view on all subjects great and small, including the ‘stranglehold’<\/em> of real estate.<\/p>\n
