My U.S. Postal mail. The mail that Roger, my letter carrier, donned in his crisply pressed blue striped\u00a0government issue uniform\u00a0and pith helmut, delivers at or around 10 o&#8217; clock each morning, except Saturdays. That&#8217;s how he likes to be referred to, or so I surmised from\u00a0the money-holder envelope\/holiday\u00a0note\u00a0he left in our mailbox last December&#8230;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nTo:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Petros and The Klopeks<\/p>\n<p>Re:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Merry Christmas\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From:\u00a0\u00a0 Roger, your letter carrier.<\/p>\n<p>The Klopeks are our next door neighbors (three generations, mostly female,\u00a0under one roof)\u00a0who sold\u00a0me and my wife\u00a0the house we currently live in. <em>I<strong> <\/strong><\/em>actually deliver<strong> <em>their<\/em><\/strong> mail a few days a week because after almost a year in the neighborhood, Roger still doesn&#8217;t understand the property changed hands and we are <em>not<\/em>\u00a0all one big happy Italian\/Polish family sharing two houses on the same oversized lot, although we&#8217;ve all told him as much on more than a few occasions&#8211;the Klopeks\u00a0and the Petros both. In defense of him though,\u00a0the\u00a0property was subdivided at the settlement table last August\u00a0(where Roger was <em>not<\/em> present) with\u00a0the main house (The Petros) and\u00a0the coach house (The Klopeks) receiving separate PINs.\u00a0 Anyway, Roger is a super-genius compared to the folks at the\u00a0City of Chicago\u00a0Assessor&#8217;s\u00a0Office who,\u00a0after an equal span of monthly correspondence and phone calls,\u00a0likewise can&#8217;t figure out the difference between a Petro and a Klopek. I tip them <em>nothing <\/em>at Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Roger is clearly not of this Midwest culture but rather from the\u00a0Philippines, or Singapore,\u00a0or some Pacific Rim territory where dentistry is not\u00a0a component\u00a0of the universal health system and where the name &#8216;Roger,&#8217;\u00a0 I suppose, is American for something else, and extended families are the norm rather than the exception. My father (who <em>doesn&#8217;t<\/em> live with us) has a <em>Dell<\/em> customer service rep, also named Roger, assigned to his extended service account\u00a0who is definitely from, and <em>still in, <\/em>the Philippines.\u00a0 Then there was the fellow\u00a0behind the <em>Hertz<\/em> counter\u00a0in Honolulu\u00a0last\u00a0Thanksgiving but as I think back now,\u00a0I&#8217;m pretty sure his name\u00a0may have been\u00a0Patrick&#8211;but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/3241\/roger-that\/#more-3241\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00a0stare in wonderment at my mail; not my e-mail&#8212;that constant leaky faucet of unfiltered real estate industry drip, male performance and enhancement\u00a0spam, and odd\u00a0social bric-a-brac from people with whom I occasionally exchange pleasantries&#8212;but my real mail.
