{"id":3343,"date":"2008-07-09T23:09:47","date_gmt":"2008-07-10T06:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=3343"},"modified":"2008-07-10T06:42:33","modified_gmt":"2008-07-10T13:42:33","slug":"localismcom-its-not-just-for-surfers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/3343\/localismcom-its-not-just-for-surfers\/","title":{"rendered":"Localism.com:  It&#8217;s Not Just For Surfers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I remember when ActiveRain.com released its Localism.com portal.\u00a0 SoCal surfin&#8217; REALTOR dude, <a title=\"rory\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rorysiems.com\/blog\/ocrealestate.html\">Rory Siems<\/a> commented that he thought &#8220;Localism&#8221; was a term surfers used for defending their beach from &#8220;<a title=\"kooks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=kook\">kooks<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0 While Localism is not a surfing site, the principle of &#8220;protecting your turf&#8221; is alive and well for local real estate professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Bloodhound colleague Michele DeRepegny <a title=\"michelle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=3341\">vented her frustrations with the new site<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But this morning I\u2019m feeling a little nauseous after the much anticipated revamp of <a title=\"Localism powered by Active Rain\" href=\"http:\/\/localism.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Localism<\/a>,\u00a0The redesign is neutral and simple, with a few twists in navigation still needed.\u00a0 \u00a0I would have rather paid for an \u201coutside blog\u201d than <a title=\"Localism - purchase communties\" href=\"http:\/\/localism.com\/sponsor\" target=\"_blank\">purchased \u201ccommunities<\/a>\u201c.\u00a0 Maybe buying\u00a0the way to the top as a community sponsor will actually reduce some of the crud posting just for points, but right now I\u2019m having very mixed feelings about continuing to drink the Kool Aid.\u00a0 Maybe I just need sleep.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was privy to a pre-release tour so I know why they whitewashed the design.\u00a0 The concept is that Localism isn&#8217;t just about real estate anymore.\u00a0 It&#8217;s designed as a national host for thousands of hyper-local communities.\u00a0 Membership is free and available to anybody in the community, including non-real estate related businesses.\u00a0 The white washing was done to draw the readers to the user-generated content rather than an appealing design.\u00a0 Community sponsorship is available to any business and quality content providers are rewarded with featured status on the pages.<\/p>\n<p>Navigation is cumbersome but the site is in its infancy.\u00a0 The designers are trying to create a sense of &#8220;stickiness&#8221; where the users are drawn to deep local content, be it pictures, video, or text.\u00a0 They have some glitches but they should work it out.<\/p>\n<p>The main feature of the site is that content will be edited for quality.\u00a0 Active Rain hired editors to determine what user-generated content will be quality and what should be buried in the bowels of the server.\u00a0 The intended result?\u00a0 A sticky site about &#8220;your town&#8221;, for &#8220;your neighbors&#8221;, sponsored by &#8220;your Rotarians (local businesses).<\/p>\n<p>Greg Swann <a title=\"seo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=3342\">feels it might be a SEO play<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>What does it portend for <\/em><em>you?<\/em> For one thing, dumbstunt SEO plays like Localism are doomed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/3343\/localismcom-its-not-just-for-surfers\/#more-3343\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remember when ActiveRain.com released its Localism.com portal.\u00a0 SoCal surfin&#8217; REALTOR dude, Rory Siems commented that he thought &#8220;Localism&#8221; was a term surfers used for defending their beach from &#8220;kooks&#8220;.\u00a0 While Localism is not a surfing site, the principle of &#8220;protecting your turf&#8221; is alive and well for local real estate professionals.
