{"id":4226,"date":"2008-09-08T23:49:26","date_gmt":"2008-09-09T06:49:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=4226"},"modified":"2008-09-09T20:06:07","modified_gmt":"2008-09-10T03:06:07","slug":"notes-on-inbound-link-text","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/4226\/notes-on-inbound-link-text\/","title":{"rendered":"Notes on Inbound Link Text"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I broke my blog a few weeks ago and it proved something pretty interesting about Google.\u00a0 The lesson behind that experience can help you bring in higher quality visitors from search engines.<\/p>\n<p>Fixing my mistake was simple since I&#8217;d just put a semicolon where it didn&#8217;t belong, and while the error was ugly, my site was back to normal in about a minute.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes coincidences happen, and while my site was belly up talking about some PHP parse error, Google&#8217;s friendly spiderbot came crawling by to pick up its latest snapshot of my site.\u00a0 Oops!<\/p>\n<p>So, normally, a search for &#8220;silicon valley real estate&#8221; shows my entry like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/svre3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"407\" height=\"58\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4231\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/svre3.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/svre3.png 407w, https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/svre3-300x42.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, for the next day or so, it would look like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/svre4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"407\" height=\"58\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4232\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/svre4.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/svre4.png 407w, https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/svre4-300x42.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After reading the ugly description text, I put my eyes back in their sockets and thought about the title text.\u00a0 I never use the phrase &#8220;steve leung silicon valley&#8221; on my site and my title tag at the moment was something like &#8220;Unexpected Error&#8221;.\u00a0 But I knew, like the Erics have mentioned on BHB before, that Google gives a lot of weight to what people link to you say.<\/p>\n<p>It takes those links so seriously, that it will literally use their text in its own search results if your site loses the plot for some reason.\u00a0 Which shows how important other people&#8217;s links to you are.<\/p>\n<p>How do I know people used that phrase to link to my site?\u00a0 In this case, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/docs\/en\/about.html\">Google Webmaster Tools<\/a>.\u00a0 You won&#8217;t use it everyday, but it&#8217;s indispensable for a few reasons.\u00a0 The most important is that it gives you insight into the great undocumented void of how Google sees your site, and if you have any technical issues that will prevent you from getting indexed correctly in their search engine.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Google Webmaster Tools has evolved to a point where it will flag issues that aren&#8217;t purely technical, like repeated titles.\u00a0 This happens a lot with WordPress blogs which use the same title any time there&#8217;s pagination.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/dupe.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"398\" height=\"233\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4303\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/dupe.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/dupe.png 398w, https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/dupe-300x175.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It also gives you the ability to communicate with Google if you really need to.\u00a0 I once bought a domain name from someone who&#8217;d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/4226\/notes-on-inbound-link-text\/#more-4226\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I broke my blog a few weeks ago and it proved something pretty interesting about Google.\u00a0 The lesson behind that experience can help you bring in higher quality visitors from search engines.
