{"id":5605,"date":"2008-11-15T04:03:55","date_gmt":"2008-11-15T11:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=5605"},"modified":"2008-11-15T05:11:52","modified_gmt":"2008-11-15T12:11:52","slug":"adding-a-print-stylesheet-to-your-wordpress-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/5605\/adding-a-print-stylesheet-to-your-wordpress-blog\/","title":{"rendered":"Adding a Print Stylesheet to Your WordPress Blog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have a Dead Tree Addiction.\u00a0 Somehow words seem clearer and truer, and  their cadence more lovely when I read them on a printed page, rather than a  computer screen.<\/p>\n<p>So, when I read a well written blog post, one that\u00a0addresses an important  issue, one that speaks clearly to me,\u00a0\u00a0my first inclination is to hit &#8220;PRINT&#8221;.\u00a0  And all rational reasoning to the contrary, sometimes that urge to PRINT just  simply\u00a0cannot be denied.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately many WordPress theme designers\u00a0neglect to include a print  stylesheet in their theme files, and the resultant printer output often  contains\u00a0an endless\u00a0jumble\u00a0of sidebar images and unusable navigation link  text.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to make it easy for your readers to print your posts, add a  print stylesheet.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<p>In a plain text editor (Windows Notepad works just fine) create a new file  named print.css<\/p>\n<p>Paste this CSS code into your print.css file<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>#nav {display: none; }<\/p>\n<p>#sidebar {display: none; }<\/p>\n<p>#content {width: 100%; margin: 0; float: none;}<\/p>\n<p>a:link, a:visited {color: #000000}<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s it, that&#8217;s all.\u00a0 The code is saying: &#8220;Don&#8217;t display the navigation  bar, don&#8217;t display the sidebar, don&#8217;t print the links in fancy colors, and fill  the entire width of the page with the post content&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Save\u00a0the print.css file, and upload it to your WordPress blog host.\u00a0 Place it  in the individual theme&#8217;s\u00a0folder; the most likely path would be something  like\u00a0<em>mysite.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/themes\/mytheme<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Now at the WordPress dashboard, go Design -&gt; Theme Editor -&gt; and in the  Theme Files &#8211; Templates column, click on header.php to open the file.<\/p>\n<p>Paste the code below into your header.php file, right below all the other  lines that start with <em>link rel=&#8221;stylesheet&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&lt;link type=&#8221;text\/css&#8221; media=&#8221;print&#8221; rel=&#8221;stylesheet&#8221; href=&#8221;&lt;?php  bloginfo(&#8216;template_url&#8217;); ?&gt;\/print.css&#8221; \/&gt;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Make sure it is above the line that reads <em>&lt;\/head&gt;.<\/em> Click  Update File.\u00a0 This little piece of code is telling the system that if it receives a &#8220;print&#8221; command, to apply the print stylesheet instead of the &#8220;media&#8221; styleheet.<\/p>\n<p>To test, click Visit Site, click File -&gt; Print Preview<\/p>\n<p>Notice that I did not remove the Footer.\u00a0 If you&#8217;d like all printouts to  include your contact information, the footer can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/5605\/adding-a-print-stylesheet-to-your-wordpress-blog\/#more-5605\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have a Dead Tree Addiction.\u00a0 Somehow words seem clearer and truer, and their cadence more lovely when I read them on a printed page, rather than a computer screen.
