{"id":6163,"date":"2008-12-18T06:00:44","date_gmt":"2008-12-18T13:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=6163"},"modified":"2008-12-18T06:59:09","modified_gmt":"2008-12-18T13:59:09","slug":"a-poke-in-the-eye-from-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/6163\/a-poke-in-the-eye-from-facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"A Poke (in the eye) from Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You know, they say it isn&#8217;t wise &#8211; when you visit the Wizard of Oz &#8211; to look too closely behind the curtain.\u00a0 Might not like what you see.\u00a0 In Australia we were recently treated to a quick look behind Facebook&#8217;s curtain and I have to tell you: the king ain&#8217;t wearing any clothes!<\/p>\n<p>Seems a nice young couple had bought a house, got upside down, stopped paying their mortgage and were doing everything they could to avoid the process servers and foreclosure coming their way.\u00a0 Not altogether different from the unfortunate antics of a great many folks over in our neck of the woods.\u00a0 I doubt many of us condone their behavior, but I find it difficult to root for the mortgage company either.\u00a0 Sort of like watching a tether ball game between your ex-wife and her attorney: I don&#8217;t really care who wins just so long as both sides take one or two in the kisser.\u00a0 Aaaaanyway, the mortgage company finally won the game.\u00a0 Want to know how?\u00a0 They looked this couple up and served them legal documents <em>on Facebook<\/em>!\u00a0 (<a title=\"Aussie court lets mortgage lender poke around Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/www3.signonsandiego.com\/stories\/2008\/dec\/17\/1n17facebook005654-aussie-court-lets-mortgage-lend\/?uniontrib\" target=\"_blank\">Read the full story here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Better yet, the local Supreme Court in Australia ruled that this was an acceptable use of the social networking platform.\u00a0 Are you surprised?\u00a0 Shocked?\u00a0 Maybe even a little outraged?\u00a0 I should say so.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll bet Facebook was none too happy either.\u00a0 Imagine the chilling affect this development may have on their social network site.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s listen in:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt praised the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re pleased to see the Australian court validate Facebook as a reliable, secure and private medium for communication,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The ruling is also an interesting indication of the increasing role that Facebook is playing in people&#8217;s lives,&#8221; Schnitt added.\u00a0 The company said it believed this was the first time it has been used to serve a foreclosure notice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can only guess at the pride they&#8217;ll feel when the first paternity suit is served.\u00a0 Are you kidding me?\u00a0 I read this and the first thing I did was look up <em>hubris<\/em> in the dictionary, just to make sure I was using that word correctly in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/6163\/a-poke-in-the-eye-from-facebook\/#more-6163\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You know, they say it isn&#8217;t wise &#8211; when you visit the Wizard of Oz &#8211; to look too closely behind the curtain.\u00a0 Might not like what you see.\u00a0 In Australia we were recently treated to a quick look behind Facebook&#8217;s curtain and I have to tell you: the king ain&#8217;t wearing any clothes!
