{"id":6301,"date":"2008-12-28T15:07:38","date_gmt":"2008-12-28T22:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=6301"},"modified":"2008-12-28T18:54:26","modified_gmt":"2008-12-29T01:54:26","slug":"the-case-for-paid-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/6301\/the-case-for-paid-reviews\/","title":{"rendered":"The Case For Paid Reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I&#8217;ve said in the past, I&#8217;m not a fan of the term &#8220;Web 2.0.&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;ll take it a step further and say that there are many aspects of the &#8220;Web 2.0&#8221; movement that I dislike.\u00a0 There are enough aspects of the movement that I find silly that I can, and will, fill a post (but not now.)<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to popular belief, I am a fierce capitalist.\u00a0 Granted, I do <em>love<\/em> the open source movement, but I also think that there are ways to monetize open source, working within our capitalist system.\u00a0 Much of &#8220;Web 2.0&#8221; seems to be anti-capitalist.\u00a0 Users want everything free (no registration, no paid memberships, etc&#8230;) and in many cases don&#8217;t want site owners\/bloggers to earn directly from their endeavors.\u00a0 It should be a labor of love, right?\u00a0 Any money earned should be earned indirectly, the 2.0&#8217;ers say.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=6276\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Johnson hit some great points<\/a> in his recent post, and I agree with 95% of what he says.\u00a0 However, I don&#8217;t reach the same conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, paid blog reviews were fantastic for SEO, but with Google&#8217;s call to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mattcutts.com\/blog\/how-to-report-paid-links\/\">turn in paid links<\/a>, and with the proliferation of the nofollow tag, this isn&#8217;t the case any longer (for white hats.)\u00a0 However, Paid Reviews are still <em>fantastic<\/em> ideas for many vendors.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Highly targetted traffic.\u00a0 Traffic that can, and will convert.\u00a0 When was the last time you clicked on an ad when reading a blog?\u00a0 However, would you follow a link to a vendor, if a blogger you respect wrote a thoughtful review, and the product pertained to you or your business?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.problogger.net\/archives\/2007\/03\/09\/do-you-read-paid-review-posts\/\">Many people do&#8230;even when they know the review was purchased.<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I disagree with Chris&#8217; conclusion that all Paid Reviews are bad for blogging.\u00a0 However, I do agree that paid reviews can, will, and should evolve.\u00a0 He&#8217;s correct that Ratespeed could possibly have become better, had an intelligent conversation occurred, and all aspects been discussed.\u00a0 How much more valuable is honest criticism over blanket praise?\u00a0 If the community you&#8217;re targetting recommends you change, and you make those changes, how would that community respond?\u00a0 There&#8217;s real value in that discussion &#8211;
