{"id":7365,"date":"2009-03-07T12:51:16","date_gmt":"2009-03-07T19:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?p=7365"},"modified":"2009-03-07T12:58:08","modified_gmt":"2009-03-07T19:58:08","slug":"heres-some-piss-poor-journalism-for-ya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/7365\/heres-some-piss-poor-journalism-for-ya\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s Some Piss Poor Journalism For Ya"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since Greg welcomed me aboard BHB last week, ideas have been racing through my head.\u00a0 What would I write about first?<\/p>\n<p><strong>CRM execution tactics?<\/strong> Too predictable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Skinned cats?<\/strong> I&#8217;ll leave that to my favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/?author=39\" target=\"_blank\">cat skinner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then it occurred to me last night:\u00a0 why not dive right in with an example of why BHB and blogs like it are putting the traditional fish rag out of business.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a sports fan(atic).\u00a0 I find it to be the ultimate in reality television.<\/p>\n<p>But whether your remote is hard-coded to ESPN or not,\u00a0 you&#8217;re surely aware of the ongoing steroid crisis in professional sports.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s Sports Illustrated features an article about a former football player named <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Mandarich\" target=\"_blank\">Tony Mandarich<\/a>, commonly known as the biggest bust in NFL history.\u00a0 However, two decades ago, SI ran a story proclaiming Mandarich as &#8220;The Greatest Offensive Line Prospect in the History of Football&#8221;.\u00a0 This story was written by a journalist named <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Telander\" target=\"_blank\">Rick Telander<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, twenty years later, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Tony Mandarich<\/span> Book Deal is ready to say he&#8217;s sorry for using steroids.\u00a0 So he looks up good old <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Rick Telander<\/span> Spineless Jellyfish and lands himself a feature <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">article<\/span> advertisement.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the article, please keep a barf bag nearby:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/vault\/article\/magazine\/MAG1152771\/2\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Tony Mandarich is Very, Very Sorry&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s my favorite paragraph from said article (via Telander):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;&#8230; He lied to me.\u00a0 Lied to everybody&#8230; I knew he was using steroids&#8230; but all I could do was hint at my suspicions&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Um, Ricky baby&#8230; you knew he was taking illegal steroids, cheating and gaming the system but you, a Senior Writer for the most respected publication in sports were POWERLESS to do more than &#8220;hint at your suspicions&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Telander&#8217;s article goes on to reveal that<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mandarich was known at his local gym as the &#8220;Doctor&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So what Telander&#8217;s telling us here is that he could have easily broken arguably the biggest sports-related story of the decade if he simply noses around the gym a little bit to explain how\/why&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mandarich magically transforms from a 6&#8242; 3&#8243; HS kid who rode the bench on his JV team into a behemoth that bench presses 585 pounds and &#8220;runs like a deer&#8221; in college<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wait a second.\u00a0 This blog is supposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodhoundrealty.com\/BloodhoundBlog\/7365\/heres-some-piss-poor-journalism-for-ya\/#more-7365\" class=\"more-link\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since Greg welcomed me aboard BHB last week, ideas have been racing through my head.\u00a0 What would I write about first?
