God gave all men all earth to love,
\n    But since our hearts are small,
\nOrdained for each one spot should prove
\n    Beloved over all;
\nThat, as He watched Creation’s birth,
\n    So we, in godlike mood,
\nMay of our love create our earth
\n    And see that it is good. <\/p>\n

So one shall Baltic pines content,
\n    As one some Surrey glade,
\nOr one the palm-grove’s droned lament
\n    Before Levuka’s Trade.
\nEach to his choice, and I rejoice
\n    The lot has fallen to me
\nIn a fair ground—in a fair ground—
\n    Yea, Sussex by the sea! <\/p>\n

No tender-hearted garden crowns,
\n    No bosomed woods adorn
\nOur blunt, bow-headed, whale-backed Downs,
\n    But gnarled and writhen thorn—
\nBare slopes where chasing shadows skim,
\n    And, through the gaps revealed,
\nBelt upon belt, the wooded, dim,
\n    Blue goodness of the Weald. <\/p>\n

Clean of officious fence or hedge,
\n    Half-wild and wholly tame,
\nThe wise turf cloaks the white cliff edge
\n    As when the Romans came.
\nWhat sign of those that fought and died
\n    At shift of sword and sword?
\nThe barrow and the camp abide,
\n    The sunlight and the sward. <\/p>\n

Here leaps ashore the full Sou’west
\n    All heavy-winged with brine,
\nHere lies above the folded crest
\n    The Channel’s leaden line;
\nAnd here the sea-fogs lap and cling,
\n    And here, each warning each,
\nThe sheep-bells and the ship-bells ring
\n    Along the hidden beach. <\/p>\n

We have no waters to delight
\n    Our broad and brookless vales—
\nOnly the dewpond on the height
\n    Unfed, that never fails—
\nWhereby no tattered herbage tells
\n    Which way the season flies—
\nOnly our close-bit thyme that smells
\n    Like dawn in Paradise. <\/p>\n

Here through the strong and shadeless days
\n    The tinkling silence thrills;
\nOr little, lost, Down churches praise
